Some of the common reason behind semen banking are -
• Age: There is an observable and significant decrease is quality and viability of sperms,
which can be stored at an adequate time and used when required. This usually occurs in
men after 40.
• Medical or surgical procedures: Some medications, such as testosterone therapy or
sickle cell therapy, can affect fertility. Testicular cancer, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, orchiectomy, or
gender affirmation surgery & Leukemia have high risks of causing male infertility.
• Occupation: People working in fields where there is a life risk, such as military, mining,
can also opt for this option to make it available to them or their partners.
• After death: Some people choose to extract sperm after death of their spouse. Sperms
can be extracted up to 72 hours after death.may also choose to get pregnant later in life.
• Frequent traveler – Many people have a travelling job and live away from their
partners. All females experience a fertile window, which allows them to get pregnant in best
possible way (Six days before ovulation up to three days after ovulation). If you are away and
travelling and your partner is ovulating at the same period, they may use your frozen sperm to
become pregnant.
• Low sperm count – There is a chance of low sperm count, even before the age of 40. Despite
low sperm count, there is a possibility of semen freezing and using it for Artificial Reproductive
techniques.
How to Collecte the semen for banking Procedures
New sperm cells takes around 75-90 days to get into function and viable form. Staying
hydrated, getting rest, and eating fresh fruits and vegetables are very important for good
semen quality. Avoid drinking alcohol, smoking and other drugs from few days before your sperm
collection time. Caffeine, cocaine, smack, ganja, tobacco cigarettes, and some other medicinal drugs,
impact sperm production. Hence, they should be avoided. Eat healthily and exercise more. Stress free life and a sound sleep have a positive
impact.

Some common instructions to obtain the best sperm sample for banking are mentioned
below:
Before gathering the specimen, wash and dry your hands. Also wash your penis with
water and make it dry.
The person undergoes an infectious disease blood screening. This is to ensure the presence or
absence of any recent or old sexually transmitted disease.
Next step is providing a semen sample. The most common and safe way of providing a semen
sample is by masturbating at infertility clinic. Samples can also be brought from home and
provided at clinic within a specific period from passing sample.
The sample must be collected in a dry and sterile container as approved by the lab and remain
as close as possible to body temperature. The container should not contain any lubricants or
moisturizers unless they’re approved by the lab.
Don't touch the cup's interior. If some amount of semen is spilled then do not try to
gather it and put it in cup again. It will contaminate the sample.
The temperature of your semen sample should be near to body temperature. Too cold
or too hot semen sample may reduce sperm motility.
In special cases, such as vasectomy or cancer treatment, a surgical procedure is necessary to
extract sperm from testicular tissue. These surgeries are testicular sperm extraction (TESE)
or micro epididymal sperm aspiration (MESA). Sometimes patients are advised to collect samples by electroejaculation or sexual
contact with a specific condom.
